be the first to tell you he didn't start with wings and a commission. Oh no. He started as a
$21-a-month Private at Fort Lewis, Washington, wearing the 4th Army patch below.

4th Army was activated in 1932 as a training Army, based at the Presidio in San Francisco,
with a primary mission to defend the Pacific Coast.
